Gamification 101 - Slideshare Presentation

Gamification is at the beginning of what will likely become an incredibly successful industry. Organizations will seek designers to help them explore the potential of gaming technology and ideas that produce behavioral and attitudinal change in human resources, talent development, instructional design, and even employee engagement.

Humans like to play, and when there is play involved, we become clever and skillful learners. Add the word “challenge” to any activity, and watch people become intrigued.

As you define the mission, create an epic adventure, add a variety of scenarios for discovery and learning, build a game layer, and tie it all together with aesthetics and design – you’ll get first-hand experience of how gamification design is used to create change within organizations.

You’ll be 100% engaged as you experience gamification for talent development. It’s like getting a gold star for a good job… only better.

It's The End of the World as We Know It!

Whether we like it or not, life is like a game with rules, challenges, and scores – so let’s take the advantage and make it FUN!

If you’re like most people the term gamification is new, but gamification is simply about taking the psychology and motivation of games – fun, challenge, achievement – and applying it to real-world, non-game situations.

Gamification captures measurement, behavior analysis, and engagement in ways that can provide a real-time understanding of performance, generate needed change, and enable organizations to meet their objectives.

New examples emerge daily of gamification innovation used to tackle challenging problems ranging from brand loyalty to employee engagement to solid solutions in the search for skilled talent.
In fact, gamification may prove to be one of the most effective means for educating and creating real change in a broad area of applications.
Gamification is at the beginning of what will likely become an incredibly successful industry. Organizations will seek talented professionals to help them explore the potential of gaming technology and ideas that produce behavioral and attitudinal change in education, scaling of services, decreasing costs, and showing value to their business or organization.

The ONLY SHRM, HRCI, ATD approved Gamification Certification started online this week! But it’s not too late to join us. Registration is open through September 30th.

Whether you are a new or seasoned learning professional, this certification will help you to quickly and easily learn how to adapt a gamification strategy for your programs.

Register for your Sententia Level 1 Gamification Certification and improve your confidence, make more convincing pitches to the C-team, and lead your colleagues and co-workers with an articulate vision.

Thinking Differently is Easier Said than Done

How often do you think differently?

Thinking differently means approaching your daily challenges and habits in new, innovative ways. One of the best ways to think differently is to challenge assumptions.

Every time you approach a problem, the natural thing to do is the thing you've always done.

You approach the situation by bringing your accumulated knowledge and experience. The more experienced and skilled you are, the more likely you are to assume certain outcomes.
One of the most powerful ways to generate new ideas is to challenge assumptions.

Creating a Culture of Innovation

Does your organization have a culture that encourages innovation or is your suggestion box covered in dust?

One of my all time favorite quotes comes from Sam Walton who said,
"The key to success is to get out into the store and listen to what the associates have to say. It’s terribly important for everyone to get involved. Our best ideas come from the clerks and stock boys."
So how do you create a culture where your employees feel encouraged to share new ideas – confident that their ideas will be respected, welcomed, and that they will receive the credit for them?
  1. Teach innovation - Host a better-faster-cheaper contest. Ask for ideas on how to speed up processes and save money, while maintaining quality. Offer prizes for those with the best solutions.
  2. Conquer complacency – An, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality can kill your organization. Don’t be left behind your competition by getting stuck in the rut of complacent thinking and status quo. Ask for input on where you are stuck in a rut, and offer prizes for the best solutions.
  3. Think big picture – Help your team to think big picture. Incorporate fun learning activities that encourage big picture thinking into your weekly schedules.
Here’s an impromptu one that will encourage your team to picture the future.

Austin Cycles

Purpose: To consider what an ideal future would look like for your organization, and to create and articulate a vision of what they can achieve.

Materials: Large sheets of paper and markers for each team.

How to: Divide your team into small groups of no less than 4 and no more than 6. Give each group flip chart paper, and markers.

Read the following lead-in to the group: “Louis Wilson has been the owner of Austin Cycles for 3 years. He’s managed his team, kept costs under control, and put in place plans to reduce turnover and to train new employees. Things are going pretty well.

Although his team is performing, Louis feels that there is a lack of challenge and excitement. Louis believes that Austin Cycles could be the best-known, best-liked motorcycle dealer in Austin.

Your assignment is to help Louis ‘paint a picture’ of his vision for the future. Draw what might be happening in the stores. What would the customers see? What would staff be doing? How would everyone feel? What would the shopping experience be? Work with your team to develop a vision for Louis’ team.”

Debrief Questions:
  • How did your team decide on the vision and what it would look like?
  • What did it feel like to draw your vision?
  • What does drawing pictures do as compared to just writing the words?
Level Up Tip: Since it is a pictorial representation of a vision for the future, and to make it a little tougher, have them use pictures only. No words.

You can find other big picture thinking activities in my Totally Awesome Training Activity Guide Book: How to Put Gamification to Work for You

Take the first step, to become a qualified gamification designer. Do you realize that among the people reading this article, you may be the one who grabs this opportunity to take the first step? As you start to think about the benefits of learning this new skill, I bet your mind can uncover further benefits in being part of the gamification design community.

Roman Rackwitz - Gamification: The Difference Between Motivating and Rewarding

Disengagement costs real money!

In a survey from Gallup Inc. with employees, only around 15% say that they feel a high emotional connection with their employer. AND 24% even admit that they don’t have any commitment for their workplace and company.

But what drives people? Each employee in each organization in each country has different motives. You can be driven by money, status, burning ambition, power, lifestyle, sociological character and much, much more.

On this episode of the Gamification Talk Radio program Roman and Monica discuss how you can discover your individual way of using game-like behavior to unfold the powerful engagement of your employees – to truly motivate them.

About Roman Rackwitz:  As the founder of Engaginglab he leads the first established Gamification Agency within the German speaking countries. How Will Gamification Help Achieve Your objectives?

"Fundamentals are the building blocks of fun." - Mikhail Baryshnikov

Haven’t you found that the really great things in life take a lot of hard work? To understand the complicated beautiful things in science, economics, and even music -- you have to get past the incredibly dull and mind-numbing fundamentals. The same is true in gamification design.

Making business processes more compelling by making them FUN is what I do – and that FUN always starts with four questions:

1. Why are you gamifying this project? When looking to gamify any aspect of your business we must first ask if gamification is a good idea and what exactly do you want to achieve from gamifying this process or this project.

2. What are your objectives? For example you may have objectives to:
  • Change a current business process
  • Train your salespeople to handle typical objections from customers
  • Eliminate knowledge silos
  • On-boarding new employees
  • Upgrade technology in your organization and you want to get employees up to speed on these new processes as quickly as possible
  • Turn dry and boring lecture type internal training and development into something that is interactive high paced hands on engaging and motivating for your employees
Repeatedly in gamification design, we have found that your objectives need to meet certain criteria if they are to be useful:
  • Quantifiable - your objectives should be measurable, e.g. to increase market share to 55%, to increase customer satisfaction levels to 95% etc.
  • Challenging – they shouldn't be too easy to achieve.
  • Attainable - they shouldn't be unrealistic.
  • Understandable - so that they are easy to communicate.
3. What are your target behaviors? Once you’ve defined your goals, you need to figure out what specific actions will be required to realize it. What do you want your employees to do that they are not doing now? What new behavior patterns would they need to adopt in order to sustain your business model? Think in verbs, not nouns. What do you need people to do?

You should rank these actions from most critical to least critical and also score them from most likely to happen to least likely to happen because that will help you to focus your game mechanics.

4. How will gamification help you achieve your objectives? Because you have identified the key actions or behaviors you want to see from your users, you can now begin to match your mechanics and motivators so that you can find a way to encourage that particular set of behaviors. If you really aren’t sure, start with just one action. It’s not a bad idea to take baby steps as you see how your users respond and whether or not you’re providing the right experience to promote the key behaviors. That way you can improve on your results with one or just a few user engagement goals instead of trying to implement a huge game layer with tons of complexity.

You may want to skip over the fundamentals of design for a variety of reasons… impatience, deadlines, or perhaps a hubris that tempts you to think, “It’s gamification, how hard can this be?” But  start with the fundamentals so that you build your gamification strategy on a solid foundation.

Are Leaders Born or Made?

Like me you’ve probably worked for the boss from hell, a bully manager who insults direct reports, belittles their efforts, and blames them for things over which they have no control.

The boss from hell will suck the life and soul out of your people and your organization, stealing dignity and purpose, and replacing those ideals with intimidation and fear.

A recent poll of 800 managers and employees in 17 industries, revealed that after being bullied by a boss, even employees who do NOT consider themselves disengaged, develop or exhibit behaviors that greatly impact their organizations bottom line:

Action-based Learning... The Art of Design

Research has demonstrated that people learn best when they are actively involved in the learning process. Over the years, action-based learning has been proven to appeal to all types of learners, as it accelerates knowledge and skill acquisition, and ensures long-term retention.

Action-based learning uses experiential and accelerated learning techniques such as immersive simulations, game attributes, and other interactive activities to help learners develop insights and transferable understanding as they internalize new information.

Well-designed games and simulations that focus on strategic business issues are extremely powerful learning tools because they are able to engage and motivate learners well beyond more traditional teaching methods. Gamification adds the mechanics that triggers the actions to fulfill the individual motivations and needs. All of these work together to ensure key learning and business objectives are met.

Sententia’s Leadership Development Program is artfully designed so that learners can easily connect the stories, tasks, and insights they experience during the program with their day-today work lives. This unique, trademarked program engages and involves participants and motivates them to learn..

Is now a good time to schedule a Sententia World Explorer Essential Leadership Skills in a Diverse Workforce™ training program for your leadership and management teams?

"But you didn't ask me if I like oatmeal... "

Have you ever thought about how you make decisions? Do you end up in “trouble” because your choices left the people around you asking, “What were you thinking?”

The truth is, you probably weren’t thinking – you were just acting on an instinct or used some kind of mental shortcut to reach your decision.

Chances are you weren’t asking the right questions to get the right answer.

Let me illustrate with a story about my son Nick, his grandfather, and the conversation I overheard one morning while Pap-Pap was making breakfast for Nick. Pap-Pap prepared a big bowl of oatmeal, his own favorite breakfast.

"Do you like sugar?" Pap-Pap asked Nick. Nick nodded yes.

"How about some butter, too?" Again Nick nodded yes.

"Of course, you like milk?" "Sure," Nick replied.

But when Pap-Pap placed the steaming bowl of oatmeal with butter, sugar and milk before him, Nick refused to eat it.

Making Work More Fun... Myth or Reality?

At work, our brows stay furrowed all day long, focused on efficiency and productivity. We often lament the loss of playfulness, laughter, and good old fun. But… who said that work and fun have to be mutually exclusive?

I prefer the wisdom of Mary Poppins:  “In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun. You find the fun and ‘snap’, the job’s a game.” Mary Poppins (1964)

Play is not the opposite of work – we can find fun in the things we do every day.

When I do my daily treadmill run (I don’t really like running, but I do it), I make it fun with a stadium-size fantasy of fitness, fame, and fortune. Instead of J.Lo, Beyonce, or Shakira on stage wowing the crowd, it’s me… with my awesome voice, incredibly toned physique, and extraordinary dance moves. Sometimes I’m enjoying it so much I start to sing along, out load, (much to the chagrin of my fellow treadmill runners).

Or when I’m working on a project and about to abandon it because either I’m not getting anywhere or just plain bored – I start playing the game of “Just 5 More…” I say to myself: “I will stick with it for ‘just 5 more minutes’ and then I will give up or take a break.”

Where is Your North?

You know the saying … “If you don't know where you are going, any road will get you there.”

How much time do you spend thinking about where you are and where you want to be? Are you even on the right road?

If you’re like most people, the business of everyday life keeps you from focusing on what it is you want in the different areas of both your personal and professional life.

In relationships, business, career, finances … unless you know what you really want … how will you know what steps you need to take to move you there?
